Congratulations to Rebecca Francis (Utah, USA) :: 2009 Chicks in Camo Photo Contest Winner!

In 2008 my dream of a lifetime came true when after 12 years of putting in, I drew out for a rocky mountain bighorn sheep tag in Wyoming. I was absolutely bound and determined to take my ram with a bow and I was prepared to do whatever it took to make it happen. Anyone who has ever been on a sheep hunt knows they are extremely difficult to hunt, even with a rifle. My husband and I packed our horses and headed out on July 29th with every intention of staying up there until I got my sheep. After several hours of riding our horses through the rugged terrain of the Wind Rivers and nearly rolling our pack horse off a vertical cliff trying to reach "sheep country", we arrived at a breathtaking meadow with a stream running through it right at tree line. We couldn't take our horses any further due to the car sized boulders and rocky terrain we had come to. But we weren't there yet. The next morning we packed our backpacks with the bare essentials, left our beloved horses in a make shift corral and hiked for several hours, hopping boulder to boulder, the rest of the way up to the top of the mountain.
For the next several days, we survived on granola bars and jerky, living out of a miniscule two man tent that we pitched in a different place every night. We endured winds that could blow a man clean off the mountain and woke up to fresh snow on several occasions. In the midst of all that, we also had to hike back down to the horses every two or three days to make sure they had enough food and water, as well as replenish our food supply, only to make the treacherous and exhausting hike back up to the top.
We were fortunate to see many great rams and even had the occasion to stalk and shoot at a couple. But of course I missed them both because the relentless wind blew my arrow off course both times. After 14 days of blood, sweat, and many tears, I was desperate. I told my husband I was willing to do anything at this point to get a ram. As we struggled up the mountain for what felt like the thousandth time, we sat down for lunch and spotted four rams above us in the rocks. All four rams had their eyes glued on us...we were trapped. My husband reminded me of a story about how his friend Kent Roberts had snuck up on a desert bighorn sheep by bending over and putting a white towel on his butt while pretending to be another sheep. I immediately said "Let's try it!". We had nothing to lose since the sheep had us pegged and we couldn't try a stalk. But of course, we didn't think to haul a white towel in our limited space, so yep...with no other resources available...I pulled my pants down to bare my white butt and pretended to graze like a sheep. Much to my surprise, the ram not only didn't run away...but he came closer to see what kind of sheep I was. I continued to slowly move closer and I shot the magnificent ram at 29 yards! My dream of harvesting a record book ram with a bow cam true!! Incidentally I shot my ram with my husband on our 12th wedding anniversary.
My name is Rebecca Francis and I am 35 years old. I have hunted all my life, all over the world and harvested many trophy animals with my bow and my rifle. I am absolutely addicted to hunting and plan to hunt my entire life. I am from Utah and Wyoming and have 3 kids, who also enjoy the sport of hunting. My desire is to help women all over the world believe that they can hunt as well as any man!
And yes...this hunt is all on video!!
